Just thought I let you all see our newest world map (screenshot by Spyder). It's directly out of the game, no photoshop or anything like that involved (we know better than BP):

edit:
also updated the media page with this new screenshot and more importantly with our first fan art submission, a version of "Stones" created by Dustin Naegel. You find it on the bottom of the media page in the Fanart secion.

Thank you Dustin!

Thanks for this great map, it is fascinating to find all the little details you can see on this map and the conclusions you can make from them, which makes waiting even harder.

I finally managed to update the Codex article, renewed the map there and removed the percentages, hope it looks good.

Thanks for the map Corv, it just goes to confirm that all our waiting is going to be worthwhile in the end. It looks truly magnificent.

Intriguing. One question, though - I always thought that Britannia was situated in a temperate-tropical region, sitting near the equator similar to North America, evidenced by the rainforest-y locale of Jehlom and the temperate Deep Forest. Was there a climate shift?
Also, what's with the ice island on the west coast? Everything else checks out, but I'm very curious as to that one island. Is that Keep off the coast of Yew getting a revival?

No. What you describe matching our Britannia pretty well (we are not very picky about it though).

Telling that would be a spoiler.

Looking interesting, in particular with regard to certain islands. Wonder what will play their parts in this...

Exciting to see the new overview of Britannia. Makes waiting for this amazing game all the better.

Looking at this map made me think of a question. Will Redemption feature the ability to purchase and sail in a ship?

I want to add to Zinis answer:

One thing that was very important to me was that the different regions of Britannia also feel different. It's a gameplay decision, not necessarily a lore decision. It's just more fun not to see the same environment all the time.

That's why Jhelom is very tropical looking with white rocks etc.. That's why Yew has a distinct "forest village" vibe instead of just being a smaller version of Paws. I guess I will post a screenshot of Yew in the insider secton.

But it's not random at all. When I played Black Gate Jehlom felt very tropical to me for some reason and Yew was always about the forest near it, always felt like a little village protected by nature. I know that other players might interpret their experiences in Britannia differently, but I don't think I am too far off.

Call it creative freedom or bendig of the lore. I am absolutely convinced that it is good the way we have it now.

And yes talking too much about the new island would be a spoiler (I think I talked a bit about it before somewhere on this forum). Before someone wants to complain about it not being consistant with the lore:

In previous Ultimas new landmasses were explained by one line in the manual ,something like "and suddenly an island appeared".

While this project is all about being true to the Ultima lore, because we all feel that Ascension wasn't (enough), it is also VERY important for us to try to expand the Ultima universe (not only in this very obvious way of course). If you think about it, expanding it, making it more than it was before IS in fact true to the series.

If we would just repeat what has been done before it would bore all of you after 30 minutes. That would be the correct way of doing things for a remake project which Redemption isn't.

I know we have been over this already, but it can't hurt to write about it again for newer forum members. Smile

Hrmm... white rocks instead of snow. That makes sense. I must need to put my eyes in. Tongue
I wasn't trying to pick holes in anything, just looking and speaking my mind. I love exploring places that just weren't there before - it gives Britannia that air of mystery and of being truly alive.

Oh you thought that's snow Smile Well I can see that now.

If you go to the media page you have some screenshots labeled with "Jhelom", like this one: http://ultima.cfkasper.de/screenshots/1v...nisles/vi11.jpg

There you can see the white rocks.

It's no problem at all that you speak your mind of course, I was not complaining, I just wanted to clarify what the thought process behind those decisions was. Smile

You know, this has got me thinking to someone doing a mod to change the map more along the lines of Ascension... I know it's pretty (very?) unpopular, but I did like the "broken" Britannia in that game.

Oh, and is that texture for the rocks (if not the rocks themselves) from Mamaea?

We will not try to stop anyone from chaning anything when the game is released just as long as they make clear it's not our version anymore Wink

And also consider, the landscape is not just a stage, it makes sense is in the context of the storyline. By changing the landscape fundamentaly you destroy the storyline. But again, if you like you can even add Hello Kitty characters once it's released.

The texture is a placeholder. One of the few left from Morrowind - ugly 256x256 instead of our 1024x1024 textures. You notice it when you're closer to the rock.

Since you are talking about the map/screenshot in detail, I just wanted to mention that it does not show most of the trees. Trees are activators (usable objects) in UIX:R, and the Morrowind Graphics Extender, which I used to take this picture, is not able to show activators from such a distance.

Interesting, so are we going to have trees you can pick fruit from ala Lazarus and Archon?

Yes we had that in 2005 already, you can also harvest corn, tomatos, carrots, ...

it all goes along with our cooking and our alchemy systems.

You can also chop trees and get your own wood for making stuff like arrows and bows.

Interaction with the world is a huge part of this game. I wrote a lot about this a few years ago.

You can even breed horses...

Everything above is not wishfull thinking but already implemeted. we still have to expand each feature (more recipies ...) but it's all working.

If we can make weapons in Redemption, I would be so happy. I felt that the blacksmithing potential shown in U7 was good, but it just wasn't taken that one step further to actual practicality. Fletching/smithing would make the game into a true Ultima successor, in my book, if the story holds up.

That's great to hear. I've always liked the idea of creating my own weapons, even if it is pretty limited.
And of the map, it's looking great. I can't wait to get to explore the world myself Smile
And just by the way, what will the ingame map look like? Will it be "drawn", or like the one you showed us here with cloth-effects or something?

Just the default Morrowind-style map. We don't have enough control over the engine to change that.
