Yeah the news was a big shock for me too, expecially now that they are working on the MAss Effec Trilogy (I can't express in words how much I am looking forward to it.

I already saw Bioware making a new Jade Empire every year. "Here comes Jade Empire 2008 and Baldur'S Gate 2009!". Or even worse: Their mmorpg is successful and they end up like Origin.

But then again EA obviously got better and Bioware even managed to get a long development time form Lucas Arts. And Lucas Arts was even worse than EA over the last few years (which many people seem to ignore). They rushed out Star Wars game after Star Wars game and the biggest victim was Knights of the Old Republic 2 by Obsidian. Those poor guys HAD TO finish it in only one year and so the really promising storyline became more and more rushed in the end.

Anyway, I truly believe that EA is better than it was a few years ago and that they will let Bioware do their magic.

Ray Muzyka, one of the Bioware founders also has high hopes:

quote:

"We are truly excited by John Riccitiello's new vision for EA," said Ray Muzyka, Co-founder and CEO of BioWare Corp. "This vision is consistent with BioWare's focus on crafting the highest quality story-driven games in the world. It will enable us to further the careers of the passionate, creative and hard working teams at BioWare Edmonton and BioWare Austin."

And we shouldn't forget: Back then Origin played a huge part in the downfall of the company (ther is a link to the article in here somewhere).

So I really try not to be too concerned, but only time will tell...

Will there be also pure stone houses, and houses that have better covered roofs (in Ultima VII, hay wasn't that common for a roof)? Oh, and please tell me there is no magical nick-nack. That had really killed off the Moonglow atmosphere in Ascension.

I for my part hope that you can catch the building styles of U VII.

We have lots of UVII-ish houses in Redemption. Moonglow is supposed to be out of the norm - something special.

Yes, I decided where it starts very early on in the development.

After what The Pal wrote I have to give one hint after all: While we often stated that the game starts exacty where Ultima 8 ended it is not where the player will actually start playing. The End of U8 is where our intro begins.

Ok, that's it with the hints... now for real. Wink

Yes definitely.

Since we have lanters that actually work you have to make them in pieces instead of one lantern. Best would be 3 pieces:

- lantern "pole"
- lit lantern (see MW CS for examples under "lights")
- "turned off" lantern

By having the lantern pole seperate and not already attached to the lantern itself you can make differnt lanterns for one pole.

If you have further questions concerning this please use the internal forum Smile

What would really make that house unique (and guys with old computers please forgive me) would be to place like strings (old leaves or something) that hangs from the roof down... and if they would flutter with the wind - now that would be like "WOW!"

Or even better would be to add those vines that grow ONTO houses you know?

Umm I don't know how to explain it so I am just going to draw it and upload this photo.

BTW, I used windows paint so don't tell me it looks bad...with proper "perfections" of SPYDER it would look great!

On the right I added the strings and on the left I added the vines. I think the vines would really make it work Big Grin

Stuff like that will be added within the engine with seperate models.

And like I said quite a while ago: I even implemented a little but effective script which allows you to set a detail level beyond the settings of MW which will make grass and other objects like that appear later or earlier. This way you can also get a lot more performance ot of it if you need to.

We answered that question as good as possible here already:

Diary: 2021-09-21 Moonglow development part 1 (Spyder)

So with standard MW settings you should be able to run it on a single core Pentium 4 with 1 GB RAM and a decent graphics card without problems.

If you want all the glory then it should be a PC with 2 GB RAM, a ATI Radeon 1900 or equal and a fast Pentium 4.

Trust me, with all the Optimizer features on (which we plan to implement) your PC will burst into tears Wink

But yeah, standard MW settings won't be etremely Hardware hungry. DH's PC will even in standard settings go down in places like Spriitwood though - because of all the foliage. I can run that smoothly on my Intel DualCore with 2,66 GHZ with 2 GB RAM and a Radeon 1950.

I think now you all have a pretty good idea wat you have to expect.

To me, that's actually a little discouraging. I don't intend to cheat, but I do like to tinker and mod. I sometimes like to affect game balance in ways that I feel add to the game, sometimes by making some things easier and other things harder. It worries me that I'll get "tagged" for cheating and have NPCs damaging my enjoyment of a game I'm SO excited about.

As someone who loves to mod games, I really dislike any measures taken to force gamers to play within the vision of the authors, even if that's their prerogative. No one knows better than me how I like to play a game.

That said, I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill and I say all of the above with a great deal of respect for Direhaggis and his tremendous work on this project.

DH got a bit over excited there. He might write the dialogue for that, but it won't be implemented Wink I think he confused scripting/modding with real cheating... can happen. Little missunderstanding that's all.

Seriously, nothing like that is planned.

It's quite the opposite: We encourage people to create Mods for Redemption. We will deliver a complete(!) game with tons of features, but also see Redemption as "raw" material for people to enhance existing contend and add on contend, as I already mentioned in earlier threads. If people come up with really great stuff we will also offer it as an "official" download.

It's not THAT bad guys. Yes I definitely recommend a faster computer to really enjoy the game without any compromises but we also have a little option for you where you can turnback the grass a little etc... so people with older PCs can play too.

It's too early to say which configuration you should have to enjoy everything with max details, but I can assure you that you won't have to buy something that isn'T on the market at the moment (and no I am NOT talking about quad core cpus with dx 10 graphic cards Wink )

I just work on the new master file and even though I know it may sound very cocky:

I am so extremely proud of what we have done! I honestly already enjoy Redemptin more than I ever did Ascension. Of course I am baised but hey, you can already live in that world and do more things than in many other games.

I showed it to my wife again and she said:

"Hey, that's like an medival cross of The Sims and Animal Crossing"

Since she is a devoted Sims fan it's a huge compliment.

Ok guys you're in for a treat!

Spyder and I decided to give you insight in the development of Moonglow! You will be able to follow the whole process from first sketches to complete models to the actual worldbuilding.

This is part 1 where Spyder will tell you more about the start of the creation of the models:

Spyder:
quote:

Hi everyone!
You haven't heard from me for quite a while since I was working at some small models for scripted features and a big mysterious secret model I'm not allowed to talk about Wink
To give you a glimpse how Ultima IX Redemption models are created, Corv and I decided to publish my recent work from the beginning on at the developer's diary.
At this point I want to tell that our whole team is working hard on this project. Modelling is a very "visible" field, where progress can be showcased easily. The modellers always get the applause, fame, girls... you know Evil
Therefore I want to cheer for all the guys working on scripts, dialogues and so on, whose work cannot be appreciated before the release.
Enough words, lets come to the first picture. My current task is making the houses for Moonglow. We start with the concept art for a very basic house. I decided not to put in too many shiny magic effects as it was done in Ascension, but maybe at the bigger buildings there will be a bit of that too.
Enjoy!

Btw: the big secret model he is talking about is really something HUGE in every possible way. We decided not to spoil it by showing you screenshots. It should be something you discover on your own when playing the game Wink

We also could have put time into building a demo, but that time would have been wasted, because the work for a demo would not have been valuable for the real whole project.

Creating a game is a complex process. We are very far, but it's all in bits and pieces which haven't been asembled yet. (at least by far not all of them).

I can now totally understand why developers don't want their product to leak early (beside other obvious reasons). Someone who isn't involved in the dev process only sees the superficial results and gets a completely wrong impression of the actuall progress.

GTA and Kings Quest. I mean, Kings Quest was so annoyingly "political correct" that it almost made me puke. Being an old Lucas Arts Fan I tried to get eveything that stood out in the environment and one scene just burned into my brain (I guess I talked about it already): There was one flower in a yard and I tried to take it and the character said "This is not mine it would be wrooong to take it".

I stopped playing the game right there. I think it was KQ 5. So any of the lead characters of GTA would definitely not work in KQ Wink

Features::

1.) Is there going to be a toggle for First Person View mode when you're using a bow, or similar ranged weapon? (With a targeting cursor is what i'm getting at, at this time i don't remember if morrowind has one...)
2.) Crossbows!?!?!
3.) Expand on the skills in ascension?
4.) Maybe quests will flow better? Ultima was kinda' choppy.
5.) Less 'Cheats?'
6.) Shurikin (sp)?
7.) Darts?
8.) Other D&D type weapons?
9.) Magic system easier?
It was a bit of a pain before... (magic system)
10.) an easier to understand journal format? (kind of like the one in morrowind!

Kudos::

I think it is positively amazing that you guys are doing this. I've seen the screenshots I simply refuse to believe you're using the MW engine, MW is put to shame by the graphics you guys have come up with. Bethesda should be ashamed of themselves for what they gave us in MW. KUDOS!

-Trent a.k.a. Dragonegger2 formerly known as Dragonegger1 before #1 suffered a horrible accident.

Welcome Dragonegger the 2nd! Smile

It's not exactly a remake because the goal of the project is to create an *alternate* Ultima IX which will satisfy long time Ultima fans. So we will not use the same story "Ascension" had. (look around in the forums a bit and you will find tons of info about that)

To your questions:

1.) you can switch between 1st and 3rd person whenever you want, no automatic switch when using bows tough.

2.) yes!

3.) definitely

4.) I sure hope so

5.) if you know the scripting system in MW I am afraid you could cheat a lot

6.) not yet

7.) not yet

8.) tons of weapons so I am sure D&D fans will be happy too

9.) hmm, well actually it will be quite complex - parts will be easier (than in Ascension) and other parts will be quite "creative"

10.) yep

@Kudos: Thanks! We put a LOT of effort into creating textures and stuff like grass to create a world that doesn't look like it has been randomly stuck together.

In defense of Bethesda I have to say tough that they had to create Morrowind for PCs with a lot less power Wink
