O.K. Corv - thanks for that. So the team have considered the matter and decided upon it. I have no doubt that it will be both original and interesting. I don't really think we need to know any more until the game is finally published.

Errm: The last Ultima was produced under commercial pressures so, as we know, Richard G and his team got nothing like what he wanted to produce. Corv and team are trying to put that right IN THEIR OWN FREE TIME!! It has and will take them ages therefore. Just so long as we continue to get snippets of their continuing progress here from time to time, I'm happy to wait! The important thing is that unlike so many other Ultima projects it continues to run.

So - what's unusual with that? When I started with my cloned Apple ][ I was O.K. with Ultima ][. 1 and III. I was also O.K. with my monochrome monitor. I certainly needed to invest in a colour one by the time IV was published, then I went P.C. - XT running at 12 Mhz (coo!) Ultimas 1- 1V worked fine on this, V was decidedly slow and VI just crawled! Then along came VII with it's additional memory requirement - 640K was not enough! This called for a new computer, so the trusty 8086 had to be replaced by 80386 machine - with an additional memory card! This ran the game but crashed every few minutes, so another more modern computer had to be acquired. An 80486 cured the problem so that the game could be played, but the iconic black box sat on my shelf for months until the required machinery was acquired. Eight ran fairly well on that machine, but another one was needed for Asention.
So- why shouldn't we need new computers or new graphics cards to play Corv's magnificent work when it is finished? I am sure it will be worth both the wait and expense when it finally arrives - certainly if the artwork and "titbits" we receive here are anything to go by!

No but seriously, I can almost smell the new. freshly hewn timber from which the ship has been constructed - it really looks superb.

In 1971, I was on holiday in Canada, and was approached by a young lady enquiring who I intended to support in the forthcoming general election. I immediately informed her that I intended to support Mr Edward Heath. Of course my "english" accent immediately gave the game away and she lost further interest. Thus I state here that I am sure that George W will be replaced by a worthy person duly selected by you Americans in due course. I am more interested in who replaces Tony Blair/Gordon Brown!

Nice one Direhaggis it is good to hear that progress is continuing.
Regrettably, as you are in the good old U.S. of A., I suspect that the girls will be wearing a little more than very short skirts! I sincerely hope that the their T-Shirts are ultra tight and give you further inspiration to continue your work on Redemption!

In U4 the bottoms of the dungeons were linked, so that you could go down one dungeon and climb up another - if you had already explored and mapped it or had plenty of the appropriate potions. This concept was elaborated on in U5 where most of the dungeon bottoms were linked by the underworld, however this idea seemed to be dropped from U6 onwards. Might it be an idea to resurrect it? Regrettably it will, however, mean more world building.

Well - it only happened to me in Underworld II; When you want to build your stats up there is an area where there are four chambers in which you can have four different types of fights. If I remember correctly, there is an inhabitant of a room with which you have a conversation who has an inexhaustible supply of champions you can fight in any one of these rooms. After the fight, your experience points go up so you can get your stats raised, but at the end of each fight, the vanquished champion always sprays around the contents of his inventory. Afer some time the fighting area is littered with lanterns, weapons and other equipment, and when this gets excessive, the game is unable to save the locations of all this junk. Thus it refuses to save at all. I soon found that the cure was to pick the junk up and cast it into a lava pit (not too far away) thus the save facility was restored.

I don't know that it matters that much. Speaking from my own experience, I had to put up with our old money system (£-s-d) where our American friends had a metric system which we only adopted in 1970. I was brought up with yards, feet and inches and am happier thinking in these units for length measurement today. Of course our rulers were dual marked in cms as well as inches so we were all familiar with it. When I started studying science, the metric system held no fears for me and to this day I remember that a metre is a tad longer than a yard. Of course when our food went metric I also had no problems because of my science experience - but it certainly caused difficulty for some.
When I was a schoolboy, certain more complex physics concepts wern't so easy to grasp with the quaint imperial units they used. Do you use the dyne and the erg in the U.S. today? This sort of thing is so much easier to grasp and teach today with the metric (SI) equivalents - the newton, the joule, the watt (instead of horsepower) and so on.

Well, as time progresses languages change - or develop. Where communities are separated, languages develop differently. I think it highly unlikely that the original U.S. settlers spoke their English with a deep southern drawl but as time has gone on, different regional U.S. accents have developed. A language only appears to stand still when the community using it is very small and if you visit Tristan de Cuna, you will find the inhabitants speaking 19th century English. Handy for the historians. The main reason that English in its many forms has become so universal is our pre-eminence in the 19th. century, and that our American successors in this direction decided to make English their language by a small majority over French or was it Spanish during their independence deliberations. Modern communication cuts down language drift, but doesn't stop it altogether and as we see here current differences are carefully maintained! Really, I don't mind if a very unfortunate incident occurred in New York on the ninth of November in the same way that our American friends believe that we celebrate the discovery of the plot to blow up our houses of parliament on the eleventh of May!
At least we had a standard system of measurement which was country wide and was taken up and is still used by our American colleagues.
I can fully understand why our European colleagues went metric over 100 years ago though as every district of most countries had a different system of measurement - and where the names of the lengths or masses were the same, they often referred to different standards! Now, apart from our scientists who have been using it for ages we are having to embrace metrication. Eventually, it will, to the understandable regret of some, embrace the world.

Sorry Corv - I did prefer the circular shield bearing the serpent which I can see depicted on my Ultima Collection box which you were using earlier today to the current symbol..... Just one opinion that's all. The picture on which I am writing this is however most acceptable.

Sorry Corv - it was my own mistake. I followed your instructions to use the new layout that you had so carefully designed, and got the page on which you are reading this. Of course, when I paged back on my browser I got the old default pages and assumed you had done much less work on the revised layout than in fact you had. I thus posted to the effect that all boards have a different feel to them in accordance with the wishes of their operators, and I had got used to the layout you had originally used on the website which I very much liked.
It was only when I refreshed my browser that I discovered you had made many more modifications in accordance with this than I originally thought you had, thus my comment was not valid and I withdrew it.
