Hello all,
I've started playing Ultima I for the first time. I entered into the world of Ultima from Ultima VI.

I keep getting killed in the dungeons. Seems darn hard to get any where. Is there a tactic that helps not dying all the time? Or maybe a way to heal. I don't have any heal spells yet. I know Lord British heals in the later Ultimas.

Any pointers most appreciated.

Thanks,
Rob

The answer is to not enter the dungeons. Entering the dungeons early will ass-rape you. You should stay on the overworld to kill monsters (after getting armor and weapons), which gives you gold. You only need to enter the dungeons four times, to kill four different kinds of monsters that dwell on different dungeon levels.

Even better, if you get a ship or aircar, you can shoot the baddies from afar to get gold.

A different can of worms is, when you need to become a space ace.

Btw., I think I better give you some tips for Ultima II as well:

-You need to get a blue tassle to get a ship. Blasting mosters with a ship is the bast way again.
-Food can be quickly gained by stealing from the takeout window of McDonalls in Port Benefice, flee if caught.
-The clerk in the hotel of New San Antonio raises stats for gold.
-The dungeons are irrelevant, since tri-lithium can also be found on surface foes.

Also, if you need information, the Codex of Editable Wisdom is THE Ultima-inormation archivein the eb, there you'll find everything. http://ultima.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page

Thanks for the reply. Good tips. I only lasted a few minutes in the dungeons and was really pissed off.

I'm currently finishing Ultima IX then I will do Ultima I-V. Really looking forward to them. Ultima IV looks very cool. I can't believe I missed playing them back in the 1980's.

I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Cheers,
Rob

Just some advice:

For Ultima II-V you should use the upgrade patches for better graphics (no more CGA!) and re-inserting the music (which was missing from the PC-ports).

Read about the four pathes and how to install them, here:

I, too, started the Ultima series with VI. I've always meant to play U2 and U5.

Right. I've got the hang of this now. Kill some bad guys on the surface and buy some amour and weapons. Then go to the dungeons, kill more bad guys and come back up for more hit points.

One thing I've noticed is when you go to a pub and buy a drink the conversation text is displayed too fast to read. I've slowed down my system with moslo to 3.4% of normal speed (which is pretty darn slow) but still no difference. The text is displayed so fast you can't read it. Is this a bug?

Maybe you should use DosBox. It has an internal speed regulator, which is muchbetter than any other tool.

Certain towns are rectangular in shape, but a few are octagonal. In the octagonal ones you can steal food or weapons or armour and as soon as you are caught, the guards start to move. If you play your cards right, you can arrange by moving and waiting as appropriate to make the exit before the guards get to you. Then re-enter, the guards are back in place so you can repeat the process! This should continue until you can get at least an aircar - so you can cross open water and land, and you should be able tio get a phasor. Defeating the odd enemy in the open countryside should then be no problem. You can also get some respectable armour too free, gratis and for nothing! By selling back the unwanted weapons and armour that you have stolen - to the merchant you have stolen them from, your gold increases rapidly.

Defeated the evil Mondain and now I'm battling Exodus. Ultima III really tests your nerve. I've now enough gold to start traveling to Ambrosia to better my stats.

Lets hope I can start kicking arse soon as I get wiped out pretty fast when I delve into the depths of the dungeons....

Well done Robbo007. Now when you take a fancy to giving Minax the boot, come back here for some hints in that direction!

Thanks, I've sorted skipped Ultima II for the moment as I was so eager to play Ultima III Smile I'm even more eager to play Ultima IV. Also knowing there is a great MAC OSX port xU4. They have updated the graphics to VGA and applied midi sound. My sound canvas has never sounded so good. LOL

In U3, I've managed to get my stats at maximum by heading to and from Ambrosia, also I have my exotics. I still like my bow +4 though. At long range it kicks. I'm now exploring the dungeons to find the various marks. This part is testing. Darn winds.

Some of the clues given from people in the towns have been very cryptic. Took my a while to get anywhere.

Cheers,
Rob

Rob:
It is now a fair few years since I played through U III However I seem to remember that you will need the magic avaiable to a cleric and to a wizard. Also, the fight to get up the corridor to find the computer and bung the correct cards in the correct slots is a long and arduous one. The restorative magic of the magical team members (can't remember whether it was the wizard or the cleric) was a necessary requirement - as was saving that copy of player.dat!

Hey Fred,

Do you mean the snake or serpent thats blocking the way? I've been building up my cleric mage up with trips to Ambrosia. I can now cast a little more than a mere Magic Missile. One thing I find annoying with U3 is its so expensive to build your character up. I think it would of been better with experience maybe or questing?

Its going to be interesting to work out how to get past the serpent. I'm thinking the marks from the dungeons will assist maybe?

Cheers,

Rob

The corridor I'm talking about is the one you reach once you have got past that serpent. How you do that, I'm afraid my memory has failed me but I have indeed done it. I would expect you need an item of some sort to permit you to pass - which might be located at the bottom of a dungeon. However this is NOT a hint - I'm just guessing. There are plenty of walkthroughs available!

EVOCARE. That's what I needed Smile Well it certainly say has been a long journey. I managed to defeat Exodus and save Sosaria once again. My word..I can tell you its was pretty long and darn hard journey.

The thing what got me most was that every 5 seconds I was locked in mortal combat. Darn poison was a killer. Does not seem fair that every time I met an enemy that had a chance of poisoning my entire party got poisoned. *sigh* Guess they were lucky on the D9 roll. hahah

I do admit looking up the sequence for the cards at the end of game. Not sure where the hell the clue was for that?? Completely missed it. I own the original Secrets of Sosaria Hint book but thats more cryptic than the clues from the NPCs.

I feel all in all Ultima III was a little of a let down. I prefer the fighting style in Ultima I and II. I'm now going to brave Ultima IV. I've found a nice remake that makes use of the original midi sound track so my Roland SC55 can pump that out...

Stay tuned...

Rob

PS: WTF is EVOCARE????
