Ascension was rigidly linear about which islands you could go to and when.

While there are a few linear segments of Redemption's main plot for storytelling purposes, being able to skip to other islands using a cheat wouldn't be a benefit or really screw up the main plot.

Actually, in some places and cases if the player did that, the Avatar's arse would promptly become his/her hat. That is, s/he would die. Quickly.

Lol. I never tried the bridge building thing, but I'm glad to see someone understood what I was saying. So I guess for now. I'll just sit here, on my laptop clutching my copy of morrowind, and wait until the game is ready. Hopefully, just hopefully, it won't be a long wait.

We could have cut plenty of corners to push forward a beta release. However, the finished product wouldn't be nearly as good. I know it's a mantra from me, but like Kultan's said: we are making good progress on all fronts.

We also could have put time into building a demo, but that time would have been wasted, because the work for a demo would not have been valuable for the real whole project.

Creating a game is a complex process. We are very far, but it's all in bits and pieces which haven't been asembled yet. (at least by far not all of them).

I can now totally understand why developers don't want their product to leak early (beside other obvious reasons). Someone who isn't involved in the dev process only sees the superficial results and gets a completely wrong impression of the actuall progress.

While I know this may sound like the team party line, I do sincerely mean it:

Compared to the old ToE team I was on, we've accomplished a huge amount of really quality work. We're also moving more quickly now that our team is more secure, hard-drives haven't recently failed, our FTP server hasn't been hacked and nuked, etc.

Could it be faster?

I don't know about other project development arms. For the main plot, in all honesty, I could devote more time to it if I spent less time working, doing stuff with my girlfriend, etc. My life got complicated and very busy in the last 6 months.

But I think when I DO get to work on writing, I have a zeal for it. Writing is moving at the same pace as worldbuilding, though, and should be finished in concert with it.

I just work on the new master file and even though I know it may sound very cocky:

I am so extremely proud of what we have done! I honestly already enjoy Redemptin more than I ever did Ascension. Of course I am baised but hey, you can already live in that world and do more things than in many other games.

I showed it to my wife again and she said:

"Hey, that's like an medival cross of The Sims and Animal Crossing"

Since she is a devoted Sims fan it's a huge compliment.

To me, that's actually a little discouraging. I don't intend to cheat, but I do like to tinker and mod. I sometimes like to affect game balance in ways that I feel add to the game, sometimes by making some things easier and other things harder. It worries me that I'll get "tagged" for cheating and have NPCs damaging my enjoyment of a game I'm SO excited about.

As someone who loves to mod games, I really dislike any measures taken to force gamers to play within the vision of the authors, even if that's their prerogative. No one knows better than me how I like to play a game.

That said, I'm probably making a mountain out of a molehill and I say all of the above with a great deal of respect for Direhaggis and his tremendous work on this project.

DH got a bit over excited there. He might write the dialogue for that, but it won't be implemented Wink I think he confused scripting/modding with real cheating... can happen. Little missunderstanding that's all.

Seriously, nothing like that is planned.

It's quite the opposite: We encourage people to create Mods for Redemption. We will deliver a complete(!) game with tons of features, but also see Redemption as "raw" material for people to enhance existing contend and add on contend, as I already mentioned in earlier threads. If people come up with really great stuff we will also offer it as an "official" download.

Well, really, no worries for me either way. I have complete trust in both yourself and Direhaggis after lurking in the forums for several years now. I get giddy just thinking about roaming around Britannia again with a whole new, but canon-contiguous, story!

I just wanted to speak up from a different point of view from those who were suggesting anti-cheating measures. While I'm vehemently anti-cheating when it comes to MP gaming, for SP I feel it's best to just let gamers do what they want. It doesn't make any sense to me when a SP gamer complains that they can cheat...just don't! Exercise some self control for goodness sake. Smile

Yeah I didn't specify what I had in mind re: cheating very well. I should clarify:

Real cheating in terms of boosting stats, somehow creating quest items for oneself that take awhile to get...all of that is perfectly well and good. It could wonkify the narrative, but that is the player's call. While I'm sure all the Titans would like players to tackle the game without THAT kind of cheating, it's a mod, it's public-access, it's yours as much as it is ours.

Indeed: if you want to terraform the Isle of the Avatar to give it a different mood, cool. If you want to gut the entirety of the main plot or extend it out even more (which can be easily done), cool. If you want auto-summoned dancing Hello Kitty creatures to engage in poetry slams to a remixed Utena soundtrack every time you walk into a tavern, cool.

Modding a game makes it yours in a unique way.

The few...ok, the one instance I was commenting on was if someone intentionally removed a critical quest item during a sequence where, I believe, one cannot drop it. It's really just an out-of-game joke.

But yeah, I never expected it to see the light of day. But if you hack the code, you can.
