This is the same reason I figured DH mentioned Bard's Tale in the original post. The dungeons were the most unbelievably tangled messes.

Ultima VIII. I actually sorta liked it, but first time I installed it on my 486 it broke my computer and I had to wipe the hard drive Red Face .

I remember really liking Wizardry for the NES. As a kid I was actually really afraid to take my party to lower and lower levels. I guess either I didn't know there was a 'teleport to town' spell or I somehow hadn't gotten it. It's lost in the brain soup of years since passed.

U8 did have one uniquely annoying section for me. I don't recall why, but it took me a long, long time to finally find the Earth titan. It was absurd. I must have kept getting lost. I seem to remember the actual way down looked impassable to get to, or the cave features made it seem that way. That did cool my senses on U8, but I loved the writing content and the world itself.

Yes, I could also have mentioned The Bard's Tale here. I have to admit it didn't have a proper story or elaborate gameplay either. Too be honest, it was an altogether awful game, especially the long loading pauses at every encounter. Plus I hated the teleprt fields inside the dungeons. But at least they were small enough - though this was probably due to the hardware limitations back then.

Still, it was my first RPG ever, so it's somewhat special to me and I had to settle for Wizardry here.Wink

Without a doubt I'd say Beyond Divinity. Clunky and it turned a potentially interesting story concept in to absolutely terrible. Plus the voice acting was very cartoonish. Oh and did I mention that it loaded malicious computer crashing spyware as an extra special bonus?

I liked the NES Wizardry also. I played it endlessly and built up my characters to the point where they could endlessly slay hoards of demons (they were blue I think) with some sort of Ninja sword. After I beat it the first time I realized you could descend to the bottom level and win the game in less than 10 minutes.

I managed to finish the original Dungeon Siege, but I felt like a zombie, it was so mind-numbing from the wall-to-wall combat.

I was only able to play Dungeon Lords for a couple of days, and I ended up just giving it away.

U8 had some extremely frustrating parts that required jumping.

I managed to finish Neverwinter Nights, but there were a couple of really tough combats, one with a mummy lord, but the worst was a red dragon..

I think I've lost a lot of patience for challenging combat. Some combat is okay, but having to constantly fight just to stay alive is crazy. If I had to pick one worst game, it would probably be Dungeon Siege, for that very reason.

My most hated game of all time:

Simon the Sorcerer 3D - its really an adventure game but MAN I expected more afte Simon 1 and Simon 2.

As for an RPG:
I'd say Dunguongs and Dragons 2 for PC. OMG, someone remove the Ultima remake. It was a rip off!

Ultima VIII is my favorite... Not because of the gameplay, but because of the storyline.
It has such a perfect story after Ultima 7, that it makes u think how difficult Avatar's struggle really was. The music was also great!

2) dungeon siege ( i loved the enviroment but the game is really ugly )

3) RavenLoft: Stone Prophet ( .... )

4) Sacred & Diablo etc ( i dont like the game style )

Maybe not the worst?

Gothic 1 is one of the best crpg games I'd played so far. Ok, the graphisms are a bit old by now, but really, it has some great features:

- good story
- challenging difficulty (well, at the beginning at least; when you get used with the fight system and have some armor, it becomes easier): more than once you'll have to flee before strong opponent
- good voice acting
- contrasted faction philosophies Big Grin

The german team of Piranha bytes has done a great job with this game, and the sequel gothic 2 (with it extension night of the raven) is even better.

Well, fans think gothic 3 need to be correctly patched to be more enjoyable and hope for an extension that will make it more alive. I hope so since the marvelous graphisms are a pleasure for eyes but the gameplay is sometimes really a pain...

Thus, I strongly suggere you give it another try...

It's certainly been mentioned here by a German member of the team or a fan that Gothic 1 had good writing. Yet an American fan felt the dialogue was lacking. It could have been a translation thing. I thought the dialogue was fine.

Gothic 1 was a pretty good game. I definetely agree about the difficulty part at the beginning. Helps you appreciate the time when you can slaughter everyone and everything.
