It looks like I'm going on vacation in Germany at the beginning of June this coming year. My girlfriend and I will be staying in Oberwerrn, right outside of Schweinfurt. We will be there for a couple of weeks and plan on doing a lot of travel within Germany as well as a side trip to another country for a day or two (not sure where yet).

So, what do you natives recommend around central/southern Germany? I'm interested in historical locations, Roman sites, Medieval architecture, good local foods and tasty beverages. Smile )

I've been looking at Wurzburg and Bamberg as starters.

We'd like to mostly avoid the overtly touristy traps for more authentic/local attractions, but we're still open to visiting some popular tourist spots.

Also, what towns are really worth a longer rail trip if we want to range out further?
