Before the database of our old board got deleted I didn't talk very well about my first impressions of Oblivion.

Now I played it again after work to relax and I have to admit: This game is great. Back then I wasn't really in the mood for playing it and I still had MW in my mind which although it had it's good points suffered from a lot of design mistakes. I didn't give the developers enough credit for Oblivion, but after I really played the game I realized that Todd Howard & team did what I didn't think they could do after MW, they created a RPG which comes right after Ultima in my heart from now on. There is much more atmosphere in there than in MW, the main quest and most side quests are really entertaining and you want to know more after your started them. That's what a good storyline is about. The NPCs don't feel like some lifeless puppets anymore, the world doesn't feel empty anymore,.. Everyone who didn't try it yet should do it, you won't regret it.

Of course it has its weak poitns but after how I trash talked it earlier I won't point them out now.

I could've told you that even though I still haven't played the game... I only got as far as character creation before my PC crashed... 3 times in a row.

But I did watch most of GameSpot.com's Greg's 12-hour Oblivion gameplay marathon, and I was extremely impressed with it. The graphics were unbelievable, and the same can be said of the story, voice-overs, freedom, addictiveness. What more can you say when the game, running on Xbox360 no less, crashed a good number of times but he didn't mind because it was extremely enjoyable, automatic saves were frequent, quick reload were fast, and none of those problems broke the game really.

Therefore, I'm really looking forward to playing and finishing Oblivion myself, just as soon as I have my graphics card back so I can use it instead of this 2MB temp card I'm using. Then I'll probably finish it, which I can't say the same about Morrowind, which bored me with it's generic-ness and I don't feel that much like going back into it.

Cheers for Oblivion.

Yeah it's unbelievable what big jump they made from Morrowind to Oblivion.

I need to buy a new machine to run that thing, sadly. But in a year or so I can buy new rectangle box for to make the pretty.

Expensive photography equipment comes first, after all.

I'm dissapointed with the NPCs though. I expected more from the Radiant AI and each NPC gets like 3 lines of dialogue. Woopie! I still feel alone in Oblivion like there's no other characters there. Just me and the world. I want to be able to make friends, not just make someone happy because I did something for him/her. I want to hang out at the pub with a few mates after a hard day of persistantly tracking a wolf that has been attacking my sheep on my farm. I also want to make enemys and not just by accidently hitting them with a weapon or nicking something from them. Why can't they just hate me for the things I say and how I make my characters personality.

I think I read that they had to dumb down the Radiant AI quite a bit before release. The NPC's were doing too many weird, erratic (sometimes homicidal) things. Like a farmer who couldn't find his garden rake would go kill his neighbor and take his just so he could fulfill his desire to work in the field.

From the other stories I read where the system was working correctly and NPC's had more normal behavior, it sounded really remarkable. I can't wait for a game where they've ironed out the kinks of an AI system where the NPC's have the freedom to just walk around and live their virtual lives based on motivations and behavior rather than scripts alone.

I think the NPCs turned out great actually. The fact that they have less but more meaningful dialogue than in MW is an advancement in my eyes.

I see your problem though Grogdon. Real companions (like in U7 for example) are missing. But there are a few good mods that give you an ingame friend. Mybe not yet the quality of high end MW companion mods but here are two really good ones:

@Grogdon: Yes, sadly that's what I miss from all the 'other' RPGs. Ultimas had companions and the feeling of fellowship and sharing in the danger was very remarkable and effective for me. I really wish other comnpanies include it in their 3D games more often.

@Kultan: I'm honestly not surprised that they had those sorts of bugs, like the farmer killing his neighbor to get a tool or whatnot. Frankly, I'm surprised we haven't heard of reports of NPCs going on a rampage and killing off every other NPC in the entire world! Frankly, Bethesda's IQ and AI are both moronic and ignorant. For them to think that they can have AIs without morality and religion, imagining that they would act decent when all the AI's have are needs and desires, and to be surprised when those NPCs commit heinous crimes is flaberghasting.

Needs and desires not reigned in with a moral compass and religion is like a ship trapped in the middle of a storm, without a captain or a steering wheel.......... its crew won't survive for long.

@Corv: My collection of companion mods:

1. An in-game *ahem* girlfriend:

I wasn't active in the modding "scene" of TES for quite some time now. Is Emma still active? She made some really good companion mods for MW in the past.

If she is it'll be for Morrowind I'll bet for I haven't heard of anything from her for Oblivion.
