Not an easy question, since different ultimas had different size Britannia. I guess it depends on which game do you want to take as a base:
- Ultima 4/5
- Ultima 6/7
- Ultima 9

7,617,930 sq km would probably be BIT too much for Britannia; most likely too much for entire Sosaria before shattering of gem of immortality. 500*500 km map (250,000 sq km and thats counting sea area in cloth map) would probably be more realistic. That would make total landmass of entire Britannia(including all islands) about 100,000 - 150,000 sq km. Britannia is, after all, land of only few notable settlements with population probably around 250,000 inhabitants (britannians) at most.
(note that entire europe is only about 9,938,000 sq km in size)

As I said in my original post the main problem we have with ultima is that it's
shown -only- as a computer game. Landmass size, population and number of settlments can hardly be deducted from this kind of medium.
Early source refer to Sosaria four -continents-; a 500x500km make it smaller than France making it hardly a "continent".
In the U4 doc the land was refered as a continent and was labelled the -Empire- of Britannia...
quote: |
From the rubble of Sosaria, Lord British was able to unite all
the mainland and a few of the islands under his one rule. This
new Empire of Britannia brought much sought-after peace and
prosperity to its subjects. |
Later in the Geography chapter:
quote: |
Most of the surface area of
the world became fused together into one large mass. It is over
this major continent — now called Britannia — that Lord British
rules.[...] Several small
villages also dot the landscape, but all are not recorded in the
charts of the realm. |
Of course the solution is then to downsize the whole world as small planet.
In my own campaign Britannia is a mix between the U5 landmass and UO (to have a few more islands to toy with).
Sosaria is a recreation of the original four landmass as seen in early UO concepts (color computer map, hand drawn map) with the addition of a northern polar land mass ,Glacia (as in UO2 map) and a southern one Frosta.
The Tokuno islands (hand drawn map, computer map), from UO:SE, would exist between the two eastern continents.

I always got the impression that serpent isle, britannia, and the other 2 lands from U1 were all on the same globe, just separated whether by magic or just vast oceans.
Of course, because of U6, some people think that Britannia is a doughnut-shaped thingee with the underworld in the center. But eh, whatever you wanna do, it's your PnP game : )

From the informations we have in U7:SI we can suppose that they are separated by magic since you have to cross the serpent pillars to reach Seprent Isle.
While time seems to have passed faster during the time of the Ophidians (I doubt that a culture like this can rise and fall in less than 30 years an d it's the "official" time between the end of U1 and the beginning of U3) the time flow has somehow resumed with the arrival of the exiles.
After the destruction of the Gem of Immortality the four "continents" were separated and each must have thougt that he was the sole survivor of the catclysm. The origin of the Serpent Pillars is a mystery, a possible source can be the Sosarian landmarks like the Sign Posts and the Towers...

While it's my PnP game I prefer to discuss it here and collect as much opinions as possible before making too much of a change... My main problem being with the lack of geographical/demographical precisions about Britannia / Sosaria and the how to determine what is the "feel" of Ultima.

Back before UO was released (during the alphas and betas) the intent was that each shard/server would actually consist of four continents all on the same map. So, Britannia would have only be one of four major landmasses. For whatever reason, they decided to scrap that idea and just go with Britannia.
They did, however, release a map of what Sosaria was supposed to look like in UO under the original design with all four continents. You may already know about this. If not, there may be some geographical detail that could prove useful to you. If you need help finding a copy, let me know. I have some very old URL's saved on another computer where the map can still be found.

I found this early UO map a while back and it is in fact what sparked my idea of recreating Sosaria in my home campaign to be. Chek one of my previous post to check the maps I already have. If you happen to have one with more details I would be glad to get my hands on it
.
By the way, when you add a url in a post it doesn't change it's color type making it harder to find them in a long post, can something be done ? I edited my own post and chaged the links color to royal blue.
