I used to post there because the older regulars amused me greatly...
Mainly because I harassed the Republican political types at how they couldn't seem to defend their vote for W. Bush. (It's strange too. Since I could easily respect someone that can make the decision to vote rationally, even if I disagree. I just cannot fathom why someone would vote, or make any kind of decision, with such a presumptuous and uninformed mentality...)

Impulse shopping makes sense. Impulse voting is much more silly.

Perhaps not. There is the mentality of voting for a leader of your particular "group", that creates a form of comfort in oneself. (Ala, how American Democrats only vote for Democrats, etc.) Maybe more of a psychological complex of belonging, rather than being silly.
Impulse buying... What's that? When I shop, it's in and out, and I do NOT want to look back. XD I never could understand the concept of wanting to buy something just because it's there/someone else has it/it's on sale. But then again, I guess I'm not quite the materialist.

I agree that are segments of society that tend to vote for those they perceive to be of their group, particularly when they want to pursue a political agenda. The religious right and their mobilization to vote for the current president is a good example.
On the other hand, I think there are a handful of issues, either liberal or conservative leaning, that act as hot button topics--bypassing reasonable assessment of an entire campaign or candidate exclusively for an often emotional response.
...I'm trying to think of a way to tie this into Ultima but it's just not clickin'.

Excellent points. It reminds me how Bush won the second time, not by arguing the important issues, but by focusing a smear campaign on how Kerry wasn't the hero on the military boat he commanded (which turned out to be lies instigated by Bush himself through a related organization).
Sad, but how else can a complete fool become president, and twice for that matter, unless he distracts people with other things. For instance, his incompetence and laziness resulted in 9/11; his reponse, attack Afghaniiiiiii... iraq.... cuz they did it!!

I'm tempted to continue this discussion, but it's not the proper forum for it. Somehow if we could move it, though..

I don't think Bush could be held so directly responsible for the attack on the Twin Towers. There are many rumors about how the Government knew full well about the threat to them, that there would be planes hijacked and crashed into a New York landmark. But I know from personal experience that threats like that are extremely common, and are difficult to take seriously unless there is enough hard evidence.
I wonder about the people whom believe we should've acted on the threat of 9/11 and then complain about the overly cautious security measures in our airports. Do we really want to pounce upon every little threat Government Intelligence finds? If that's the case, maybe security just isn't good enough, and people should not be allowed to board a plane without a thorough strip search. XD

Of course Bush can't be held directly responsible for the attack, that credit goes squarely on the backs of the attackers themselves. On the other hand, he made it very easy for the attackers, as he was one of the main incompetents -and frankly lazy- bums who didn't do their jobs. Yet, he, and the CIA, FBI, made up some bull about how their hands were tied and restrictions/handicaps were really hurting their work and investigations. Those restrictions/handicaps were none other than civil liberties, human rights, civic rights, freedom of speech, protection from torture, the Geneva convention, the international human rights accords, the constitution, the justice system, and due process to name a few 'annoyances'.
So, the short answer is he didn't pull the trigger, but he might as well have. Consider that the CIA was tailling these suspects, who they knew about, in Asia where they incompetently lost sight of them.
The FBI knew that something was going to happen involving planes and certain individuals, who they were tagging, and who they also knew about since airplane schools mentioned to them that it was wierd that these guys wanted to learn how to fly, but not how to land a plane. Hmmmm, wonder why that was?! To top that off, FBI special agent, two that I recall specifically but I don't recall their names off-hand, were following up on this plot, but their bosses impeded them and eventually scuttled their efforts by not paying 10k to a source in the terrorist's hood, and by disregarding evidence put forward by those two and others. The biggest irony, sadly, in this case was that the man I'm talking about, who ended up leaving the FBI, was in charge of security for the WTC and died in it.
Even still, the intelligence agencies didn't blow it all by themselves. Indeed, they did have information and definite intel about suspects in the states and about their target and method of attack, and that information was given to Bush the day before, while he was on his ranch, but we all know how 'hard working' our pres. can be, so I doubt he ever bothered reading it. This was mentioned in Fahrenheit 911, in addition to how absolutely irresponsible he was by not acting when he was told of the attack, but instead he just sat there reading a story with kids. Not that he would've had a clue what to do anyway, like when his aids worked for a day to come up with a video with movie clips and information sprinkled in so he'll have a clue what the story is about.
All sad, but quite true unfortunately.

What if the whole 9/11 was all grand conspiracy engineered and executed by the US goverment, the military and various intelligence angencies to give them free reign to do what ever they wanted, silence the opposition and turn US into a police state where people can be arrested any time without any reason or evidence and held in custody for indeterminate time without trial or right to see lawyer and where goverment can monitor peoples phone calls, internet use and email without court ruling?
