I find the idea that we have Richard Garriot to thank for the modern RPG a little hard to swallow. I think the Ultima series was definitely the most successful of Western RPGs (just in terms of how many games were produced) but to say it was all him and not the many other designers out there putting out awesome games is a bit fanblind.

When Ultima X was cancelled as a single-player game I was hugely disapointed. When it was cancelled as an Online game I hardly noticed. Personally, based on Ultima 8 and 9, I'd been of the opinion that Garriot had basically gone mad and run out of things to offer. Ultima 3-7 and the Underworld games have a lot of merit and Garriot's contribution to the canon is enormous, but that said, he wasn't the only person who worked on all those games.

I deserve money, I reckon.

that Ultima 8 turned out the way it did is, for a huge part, his own fault yes, because he has fallen for the money making machine called EA - he himself said that hegot convinced that it's bet to release one game a year. He didn't take care of Ultima 8, gave control to others and then wondered why it turned out the way it did. He says that Ultima 8 is his least favourite one. I really like Ultima 8, parts much better than Ultima 9. Ultima 9 then suddenly was important again for him but there it all was too late already, he showed EA that UO could be the better gold-donkey and so they didn't care much about the development of U9, made it difficult (but you can read that story all over the internet).

So basically I don't think that he run mad or ran out of ideas - it's just quite obvious for me that he didn't take care of Ultima and the details in it as much as he should have. He had luck with Ultima 7 since Spector did what he should have done, but after that there was no replacement for the "missing king" in the development.

Ultima 8 had me up until the point I spent days jumping from platform to platform to get to the earth titan.

The problem with U8 (and U9 to some degree) IMO was that it was more about being very graphically beautiful - which it is - and not about being fun. Someday I might try it again, but U8 at the time was simply excrutiating to play. It's one of the very few games I've ever started but not finished.

It seems a shame Garriot decided to rest on his laurels a little early perhaps, but then again, I couldn't blame him for maybe not necessarily wanting to spend his whole life designing the same game world over and over again. Still, what does he actually DO now, except announce games that never happen? Gosh I'm negative today.

I deserve money, I reckon.

Garriot didn't decide to focus on graphics. Ultima 9 was originally going to be a 2D game. EA moved all the staff over to UO, told Origin to junk the entire game and start over from scratch, and then depleted the team a second time.

The development of U9 was a mess all around.

Garriott always wanted each Ultima to be high-end in terms of graphics - but never ONLY there...

As I said in my previous post, I look forward to playing the game when Corv and his colleagues have finished it. Only then will we be able to judge the wisdom of what has been posted above.

I still believe that games without amazing graphics have a future. Take the Baldur´s Gate and IWD series for example. I still consider them my favorite RPG´s, because they give that incredible sense of immersion into the gameworld, and part of that is given not by fancy 3d graphics, but by that bookish look it has, all the buildings and forests and locations that seem to be born right out of your imagination.

I´m getting home sick...

You are certainly not the only one who loves Savage Empire. I really love that game and also Martian Dreams - I actually like them more than both Underworlds...
