I finally upgraded from my old GeForce2 card a couple months ago, to a Radeon 9600XT. In the process of switching hardware around, my motherboard died, so I had to replace it with another nForce2 board.

After a fresh install of XP, I can't actually get U9 to load. When I run the .exe, the screen briefly goes black as it changes video modes, and then it crashes to the desktop. The "view details" button when Windows tells me it crashed doesn't tell me anything useful.

It has the 1.19f patch installed, and I'm using the latest Radeon drivers and DirectX 9c.

Anyone run into any problem like this?

I was looking for the Wayward Avatar forums to ask there, but they seem to have vanished.

Thanks!

Try installing the latest version of Quicktime.

I'm pretty sure the latest version of Quicktime is installed; my fiancee installed iTunes 5.0 a couple days ago to connect to the iPod.

What difference could it possible make though? It worked fine when I had older versions of Quicktime installed (before upgrading the PC), and I've had it running without Quicktime installed at all. U9 doesn't use Quicktime for playing its movies, does it?

Ascension asks you if it should install the DX Media Package that comes with the game. If you use XP you should NOT do that. If you did, then this is most likely the reason for your problem.

Also I think you have to install the 1.18f patch before you install the unoffical 1.19 patch ... but I am not sure about this and this should also not be the reason for your problem.

I have the "updated" install disc with the 1.18 patch applied, and I haven't installed it any differently than I have on my previous couple of system configurations. I never let it install the DX Media package, or its version of DirectX.

The only thing that has really changed is my video card, so I'm assuming it is related, but my searches for Radeon 9600 crashes with Ultima IX haven't turned up anything.

Thanks for you tips though!

I have a Radeon9800 Pro with Catalyst 5.8 and DirectX9.0c installed. U9 runs fine, and I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with your ATi card.

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode to Win98/Win ME? I remember having a similar problem with U9 some time ago, and this helped (though it runs fine now with standard XP settings. :?)

Oh, and make sure you've copied the folder "Movies" from the U9 Game CD to the U9 main directory on your harddrive (in my case that's C:\Games\Ultima IX). You should do so anyway to speed up things and conserve your CDs.

Next, open the options.ini file in your U9 dir and look for the line "MoviePath=xyz", where "xyz" should point to the movie folder (e.g. C:\Games\Ultima IX\Movies).

I hope this helps!

I don't know what the problem was, but it's working now. I uninstalled it, then re-installed it and tried running it before applying any additional patches or making any configuration changes. It worked fine.

Then I went and applied the fan patches and messed around with the configuration settings, and it still worked. I like being able to push all the detail settings up to max, and have it run very smoothly without having fog and rain in Lord British's throne room.

I'm debating whether to play through using Grandor's dialogue patch or not. I've played through the first couple of shrines with it before, but the way the game engine handles dialogue text is kind of annoying -- it's obvious the game wasn't meant to be played without spoken dialogue. I probably should, since he thanks me by name (Lord Eternal Dragon) in the readme file.

Do it. The original dialogue is just too stupid sometimes :?.

Googling it should get you the right files. They're fairly widespread, given their popularity.

What was wrong with that? This is how my game went:

"I am Ooli of the Wyrmguard!", Ooli says.
Oh, another one of them, I think. "Have at you!"
*Avatar hacks Ooli to pieces and continues his quest*
*proud of his achievements he returns to see Gwenno on his way back to Britain*
"You killed my husband! I hate you!", she says.
"Your husband?" I say, confused. "What are you talking about you daft woman?"
Was Iolo one of those treasure hunters?, I think. Did I miss him down some passage and he got eaten by ravenous rats? I'll have to replay the dungeon
*replays the dungeon and this time doesn't kill Ooli in one hit and works out what is going on*

What I wanna know is how Gwenno knew I had killed Iolo, when I was the only one there, and I didn't even know. She must be working for the Guardian!

Ah yes, the Iolo encounter. I have a very funny story about this.

SPOILERS BELLOW!

You see the first time I played Ultima 9 I went straight to the dungeon (i mean, why would I go inside that house when the game states specifically, go to the dungeon and investigate).

So I enter the dungeon, free the hunters smack a few rats and reach the end of the dungeon (end of the dungeon eh?! I guess this completly ends up the "other side of the world" plot from U6) and there is this old bloke saying he knows me and he wants to kill me. Cant do much about it, just one line and the guy draws his sword. So I proceed to smack him (took a couple hits to make him go down actually). Hmm, that beard DOES look familiar but I don't know any ooli. Must be nothing.

Done. Get the strange looking artifact, go back up, curtcene and time to go back to LB. On the way back (it was only a couple weeks later that I discovered you can arrive much quickly by going from the backside of the castle) I get curious about this house so what the heck, I go in. Oh! Its Gweno! And she's much younger than the Avatar! She must have smuggled some potion from those monks in SI... She bables something about Iolo in the dungeon. The only option I have is I havent seen Iolo down there, which was true then. Hmmm, strange, maybe he is still traped down there. Cheking dungeon, find secret room with armor but no Iolo. Must b one of those bugs I read about. Ok back to work, what was that cute pirate's name?

So, a couple quests later I arrive at this female wyrm guard saying she is Anaj not Jana, I go WTF?! Hang on there.... Activate memory dump... dumping....

OMG! I KILLED IOLO AND MARIAH, WTF?! Mariah didnt even identified herself how the hell... Ah damm! I guess it's back to the start.

So, you HAVE to talk to Gweno before enganging Iolo into combat, otherwise he doesnt plee for compassion, or maybe I just caught a bad bug.

I have some more stories from Ultima 9, maybe I will share some of them later.

Here's an odd thing...

I've played through Ultima 9 several times. Not once did "Ooli" ever identify himself. Simply "Who goes there?" and attacked. Happened with every new game, even when I saved and reloaded. (I didn't even know he was called "Ooli" until I bought the Prima Strategy guide. Even then, I was skeptical, since only about 10% of that awful book has an ounce of truth to it.) So it was kinda odd when I suddenly heard this strange attacker start begging for mercy saying: "Wait it's me, Iolo!"

And that voice actor sucked. It sounded like they intentionally wanted to make his dialogue sound like a load, just to make people wonder if it was either really bad voice acting or a really horrible attempt at a plea for life.

The voice wasn't the only thing about Iolo that was weird.

1. His wife found the secret of eternal youth and didn't share
2. He somehow appeared back in Britannia with no explanation
3. His wife somehow appeared back in Britannia with no explanation, and decided to become a trophy wife instead of being useful
4. Iolo is meant to be large and manly. Instead he is a dwarf with a funny voice
5. He seems to have lost his crossbow

There are probably others I can't think of at the moment. Iolo was probably the biggest disappointment to me with U9

Interesting... I guess if you talked to Iolo's wife, you'll get an option in dialogue to spare his life.

Personally, I figured out who he was, and when he attacked me, I just went about my business and ignored him (I'm too powerful and he's too old and wasn't worth the trouble).

Looking through the UIX guide book had nothing to do with it. Nothing I tell you!
