I think a manual feeding would be wonderful, with the caviate that some npc free food providers were available. From U5, I'll never forget stumbling into East Britannys after a hard and unsuccessful mission which had left my party bereft of food. Too poor to purchase food, we were eating food from the farming fields though we were cursed later by the campfire visiting Lord British. It was a low point of the quest.
I would humbly request that there be free food in some villages or towns, perhaps in yew there could be a "hippie circle" where loaves of bread could be handed out for a druidic circle of fire party, and perhaps Empath Abbey having a food outreach program for the poor which avatars low on the funds could partake of during times of thin.
Not saying every town should have that, but a few sprinkled here and there could provide nice plot depth to the food eating ritual.

I think I'd prefer to see food quest items not being "food" items but "quest" items so we'll not have the problem from U7.
Also since party feeding is automated they should eat the food item wich will better feel their needs. Eating & drinking in a CRPG is nothing new, my first experience with it was in Dungeon Master. By the way will the thrist/hunger be shown in the UI (either as a bar or numbers ) or will it just be a "fluff" line (like "you are moderately hungry") ? Maybe then you could overide the auto-feed ability of your party members to be sure they'll be fully satisfied by the time you enter that cave/dungeon/castle.

The choice is hard. I can only think of a mix of the two.
Have it so you can feed the Avatar whenever you want, which can have all sorts of effects, but make it so he will automatically eat something before becoming sick, losing, stats, and eventually dying. What I mean is, only punish the player if he didn't carry any food, but not if he forgot to give Dupre his morning booze one time.
So I vote for "I have to feed him/her manually", but actually I'd prefer a "semi-automatic" system.
I played some very old Ultima.

I think I'll settle with automatically eat.
But of course, I want to be able to force something into my own mouth even if I just ate a cow

wooaa, just realized my last post was nearly a year ago
Well I think its fine either way, but if done manually I dont think i'll like it if its
overdone. Maybe give the option to plan ahead for the next few days...
but I definitely dont want to go feed my companions
Their supposed to be adults who can fend for themselves.
If theres a food shortage then let them bother you about it. Too bad theres no
bloodthirsty vampires in britania
