I bought Ascension in 1999 ages with the nice cloth map which adorns my wall *hugs it*
But with the system i had then It was unplayable Plus it was before the 1st patches...
I cried and put it onto my shelf never to be played again
6 years on I clean my room and LO and behold I find the box!, I stop everything and throw the new cds into my newly built rig and jump up and down as it installs, (while i trawl the net looking for the newest patches...)
I get it all installed with patches and run it with all settings on max and then I lose myself for two weeks on and off playing this game and becoming wrapped up in ultima once again.
And 3 hours ago I finally typed in those blasted words of Armageddon, and lent back in joy as I watched the Fmv.
Now for 6 years since i got that game it was worth it..
But really.. I was let down... Did they totally forget about pagan?! hell Titan of ether! >_< Also upon reading the "original script" its nothing like it.
Ah well.. its made me smile and it reminded me of the glory days of RPG's
not installing ultima 8 now... at all honest

Hey, don't forget the continuity fan patchs and the AL (anti-linearity) fan patchs.
They make U9 actually better.
Say, I am curious, though, how do you edit the flx files for dialogue and such? I'm thinking about tweaking the dialogue to match the AL landscape patch.

I have to admit that I didn't play Ascension through. If I remember correctly I quit when I was in Jhelom. Do you think it would be worth it to try to play the game through or is the ending so disappointing it's just too
sad a thing to do?

I would recommend playing it through - but only after you've installed the patches 1.18f, 1.19 and (most important!) the dialogue patch. It gives you a much more intense Ultima feeling by adding lots of references to the older Ultimas.
The denizens of this mystic place assault you without warning.
You see 99 Berserkers, 99 Berserkers, 99 Berserkers, and 99 Berserkers.

That dialogue patch really lifted the game alot.
And Sir Iceblade, There is a prog floting around the web where you could change the text. But I dont know if its gone forever. I might still have it on my harddrive.
However, I am playing with flx files on a weekly basis. I am working on a tool to read and change the flx files and let people mod the game. I will make it in JAVA (as soon as I have learnt the language :lol: ) but for now I am stuck with PHP-shellscripts.
If there is any intrest I might post some info on my page about the fileformats of UA and my various findings.
