I was just reading up on No Mutants Allowed, specifically their 'Glittering Gems of Hatred' article (which I recommend as a really interesting commentary on intelligent fanbases).

It got me to thinking:

How has the RPG genre changed since the golden days of around 2000? Do you think the developments have differed greatly between PC and consoles? Regardless of if they have or haven't, how do you think things have changed?

To be honest, I partly ask because I've been out of the loop for 3 years. Vampire: Bloodlines and Fable were my last two RPGs.

Oblivion was probably the last good rpg I played. Knights of the Old Republic was a great rpg, 2nd one was ok, but rushed. Vampire: Bloodlines I really liked as well.

Other than that, haven't seen any good rpgs. Neverwinter Nights 2 was just ok for me. There are a couple of diablo clones out there which don't really interest me at all. MMOs, FPS, and RTS seem to be the games that are mostly being made now. It takes a lot of time to make a really good rpg, and gaming companies don't really seem interested anymore. Most developers are more concerned with graphics now, than game content.

I don't know of any rpgs on the horizon, except BioShock which is FPS/RPG similar to System Shock and Deus Ex. I am excited about this game, which comes out in August.

Well, I played in the stress test of Lord of the Rings Online, and it seemed like a great single player RPG. Pity it's an MMORPG. Is it just me, or does everyone else hate playing through the exact same quests as everyone else in one of those?

I'm gonna have to agree with Bloodlines and Oblivion being basically the only RPGs of note lately. I wish Bloodlines was more replayable. Even as different clans you're basically playing the same game, and it's not long enough to make that not get boring after a while.

I figure we just need a steady stream of fan games/remakes to come out. That would make life good. I still haven't played Lazarus... I should probably do that. I think after Infinity Eternal I'll just start making smaller games that don't require huge teams and years to make. It's not hard to make a nice, decent, long RPG in a shorter amount of time.

The main complaint I have about RPGs these days, are when they make them for PC and Consoles at same time, they tend to dumb down the game so it works better on consoles. I would say that Kotor is the only exception, where they actually worked to make it more compatible for PC, not the other way around Smile
