IMO some great RPGs that don't get the recognition they deserve (at least in North America) are the Gothic Games Smile . I've never heard of Earthbound though, what's it about?

(gasp!) You've never heard of EarthBound? Why, its a pinnacle of the Super Nintendo system. I highly suggest that you find yourself a copy. Since a copy of it on Ebay costs roughly $70, and I don't even know if you have a SNES, I would recommend getting a ROM of it online for your comp. I hate to force my opinions on people without explaining them more, so I'll just shut up now.



As for what its about, it has the basic four characters together, HP/MP (or PP as they have it in the game), and a fairly simple equipment system, which just has weapon, body, arms, and other. What makes it unique is its tongue and cheek humor.

I wind up liking game series more than specific game titles. This is largely due to the general style and atmosphere they create over time. I really enjoy a good commitment to atmosphere. There are; however, some games within each series that leave a more lasting impression than others. These are not in ranking as each series really has such a different feel from the others. They all are tops in my book.

[1] Might & Magic series (especially III & VI) but not IX (disaster)

[2] Baldur's Gate series (emphasis BG II and its expansion. Building off of BG I, the sequal had such in depth character interaction and development it kept me very interested throughout)

[3] Gothic Series (I loved all three but Gothic 2 seem to hit such a perfect balance of midieval feel with better graphics). The game play was strange, but once used to it - I loved it.

[4] Discworld series! If you have never played them, I recommend them - especially Discworld Noir.

and the most unique game series that literally changed the way I think and approach gaming...

[5] Thief series. (my favorite is the original Thief: The Dark Project). I cannot say enough about how much I truly loved how this series breathed such a uniqueness into gaming history.

Just as a side note: Ultima series (emphasis on VI, VII parts 1 and 2). I actually even enjoy U9 if I play it based on its own merits and forget the mockery the ending makes of the series.I really liked the openess and exploration feel of it. Some dialogue can be seen a mile away tho lol.

A list of 5 will be limiting, but here goes:

1: Dues Ex - a shining example of emergent gameplay, and dare I say it, Warren Spector's Magnum Opus. Must be played through multiple times to be fully appreciated for its unprecedented level of depth

2: Baldur's Gate series - sorry to reiterate, but it must be mentioned for its impressive capacity to allow the player to truly role-play a character of any alignment

3: Quest for Glory series - a saga of mirth, discovery and sheer entertainment, built around a progressive attribute system similar to Morrowind. Players could play as a warrior, thief, or wizard, heavily influencing the storyline as well as the approaches to completing the game. It also allowed players to export their characters from one game to the next, and if they were a virtuous character in the first two games, a fourth class, the Paladin, became playable in the third installment of the series

4: Legends of Valor - a very obscure title, it was an excellent RPG for those that were able to get past its shortcomings. It allowed the player to align with various Guilds (fighters, mages, thieves, clerics) in order to accomplish the ultimate goals of the game. Character creation, persistent stats (your life bar was set at char creation and could not be increased throughout the game while your character slowly ages) the need to eat, sleep, see a healer occasionally, all factored into a memorable RPG experience

5: Morrowind - most here will not need to be sold on the merits of this title. A standard to which all sword and sorcery RPG's should be held up too. Oblivion was to Morrowind what Dues Ex: Invisible War was to Dues Ex. A dumbed-down, hollowed out shadow of its predecessor

Top 5, huh? Let me plumb the memories of what I know...

1) The Phantasy Star series (excluding the online and universes), particularly the 4th one. The artistic direction the series evolved into was possibly the best realisations of potential I've ever seen. I felt for Aeris when she was killed, but when the bombshell was dropped in this game I cried.

2) The Ys series. Best. Music. Ever. Oh, and the awesome blend of story and dedicated dungeon-crawler is so rarely well done - but here we have one.

3) Lands of Lore. The way the main characters evolve slowly from having no confidence in their skills to being heroes of the realms is awesome. Plus, the range of foes is truly fearsome.

5) Anvil of Dawn - A simply amazingly crafted RPG, a shining gem of the late '90s. Not as fantastic a story as the others, but the quality of the game graphics and the magic system (oh goodness me, the magic system!) makes this a definite top 5

5) Battle For Wesnoth - A strategy RPG (not my favourite cup of tea) that has such a big modding community it isn't funny. This gives it the clout it needs to push it into my top 5, even if it is crossing a border genre-wise.

Completely forgot about that one for some weird reason because I absolutely loved it.
