Exult for PocketPC! 22-06-2021 12:46 Forum: Ultima 7 part 1 + 2

I had already given up hope, but - here it is!

There's still much to be done, but it runs fine on my HTC Tytn (MDA Vario II) and seems to be stable:

To get you started with DOSBox, read the DOSBox readme and the following:

http://vogons.zetafleet.com/viewtopic.php?t=8933

or simply download the attached dosbox.conf and copy it into your DOSBox directory. You should then copy/install your dos games to C:\dosgames, otherwise it won't work (or edit the path settings at the end of the .conf file).

Change emulation speed with Ctrl-F11 & Ctrl-F12.

Have fun!

This is the same reason I figured DH mentioned Bard's Tale in the original post. The dungeons were the most unbelievably tangled messes.

Yes, I could also have mentioned The Bard's Tale here. I have to admit it didn't have a proper story or elaborate gameplay either. Too be honest, it was an altogether awful game, especially the long loading pauses at every encounter. Plus I hated the teleprt fields inside the dungeons. But at least they were small enough - though this was probably due to the hardware limitations back then.

Still, it was my first RPG ever, so it's somewhat special to me and I had to settle for Wizardry here.Wink

I've deleted my avatar "accidentally" (out of stupidity, to be honest), and now I cannot upload a new one.

It states the following:

Warning: move_uploaded_file(./images/avatars/avatar-31.gif) [function.move-uploaded-file]: failed to open stream: Permission denied in /home/www/web44/web/ultima/board/usercp.php on line 845

Warning: move_uploaded_file() [function.move-uploaded-file]: Unable to move '/home/www/web44/phptmp/phpbE2Bve' to './images/avatars/avatar-31.gif' in /home/www/web44/web/ultima/board/usercp.php on line 845

What's wrong? Or am I still just being stupid?

Wizardry VI - Bane Of The Cosmic Forge

It's not the missing automap (I love drawing my own maps) it's just that the whole game was the most enormous dungeon I have ever seen, while the "story" itself would fit on a slice of toilet paper. And once I had finished this crappy and altogether far too difficult piece of #&%* , I got rewarded with one of the worst and stupid endings I have ever seen so far (well, perhaps Doom was even worse, but that one hardly qualifies as a game Cool ).

Well, I went ahead and bought part VII anyway, but I gave up somewhere in the middle because I had died of boredom.Evil

Unless you're only trying to be sarcastic, I don't see the point in seriously answering this post. About "7 years for you...": you might want to browse this forum for answers, it's been explained over and over again.
Btw (just in case you haven't noticed), the people working on it are doing this in their spare time - for free.

Right you are!
There's not enough going on round here lately (although... I really enjoyed Sowser's dirty limerics thread Big Grin ).

But - I dimly remember Grogdon saying something like "Guys maybe you should consider this a calm before the storm. With things still moving along it won't be long till almost everyone will have something they'd want to show off." (...)

Would be nice for christmas Pleased

Graphics wise, there's no comparison between U6's boring graphics and U7 beautiful crafted and detailed VGA graphics, objects, portraits, etc. The same goes for the sound, which was much better in U7

Well, that was simply a matter of technical improvements that were (and are still being) made through the years. U6 was developed for 80286/VGA machines at the most (2000 $ back thenBig Grin ), yet it still had to run on XTs w/ CGA/Hercules graphics.
And, speaking of boring graphics, you would better compare U6 to U5, where the difference is much greater.
Of course you're right, U7 did everything better than U6, but U6 was the first RPG ever that gave you the freedom to manipulate and interact with the world (e.g. taking and moving chairs, crates, etc., or blowing up doors), which makes it the most significant Ultima IMHO.

The cpu should be strong enough, anyway. Morrowind only required some hundred MHz, Redemption will be a bit more demanding, but that'll be no problem.

I think in one of the very early Ultimas (U3 maybe) you had to kill some children sitting in a cage in order to reach a certain lever or button, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, it was because acting immorally (stealing, murdering) gave the player a big advantage in U1-U3 it was that RG implemented the system of the eight virtues and - karma points... In U6, if you ran around stealing whatever you could get, you'd get stuck right at the end of the game when it told you your karma was too low to summon the codex.
A nice way of punishing "evil" players (who didn't know the 'spam' cheat)...

Forget about U9's "Final Install".

Download the Ultima IX:Ascension Extended Setup from Xenerke's Ultimatrix download page (http://membres.lycos.fr/xenerkes/download.htm) to configure the game.

And yes, I couldn't understand either how Deus Ex or System Shock didn't get the praise they deserved - especially in comparison to [favourite 3D shooter]. But hey, maybe those games were just a bit too sophisticated. Or why else has "The Da Vinci Code" become such a huge success...?

"Yes" for me.
I like the idea of status bars, I'm a fan of statistics Big Grin
No, seriously, I always thought the status bars on the DOSBox homepage were quite informative, same goes for the Lazarus project. They've reached 95% overall status by now, that looks really great!

True! Especially with a party system it's much more convenient if you can just swap weapons between the members any time you like, e.g. melee weapons :sword for bows :bow (if someone gets injured :axe and is supposed keep out of immediate trouble :winkSmile .
I HATE it when I begin a game without knowing its skill system, only to find out after weeks of playing that I raised the wrong skills :?.

You're right, it IS the fellowship track.
Now that'll be hard to implement! Haven't the remnants of the fellowship moved to the Serpent Isle after it was banned by LB!?
