Are there any plans for adding character portraits for the various party members and NPCs throughout Redemption? I personally think that they have added a lot of personality to the Ultima games which have used them in the past. They could be incorporated in one of a number of ways – for example: the floating portrait style as seen in U7 or the separate dialogue window used in the Underworlds. I think that the latter would possibly be more effective in a 3d environment. The party members could have their portraits arranged along the side of the screen. This would work paricularly well for in-game comments in the style of U7 (which could appear alongside their pictures). If their banter merely hovered above their heads it could be missed in the 3d environment.

The project looks very promising thus far. Keep up the good work!

Well, considering the detail that we can achieve with faces in the engine, I don't really think portraits are needed, especially since we'll be making specific faces for most main characters (Not sure about most NPCs... Corv, a word? : ), I don't really think portraits are necessary. I agree with you, it adds charm to the entire game, but I'm not entirely sure it would be scriptable. But Corv knows more than me. He's smarty dude.

Welcome Fengul!

I know what you mean and yes the portraits added alot to the atmosphere of Ultima 7, but Chlor (who is also a smart dude Wink )is right, there is absolutely no need for Portraits in Redemption. Not because the idea is bad, not at all, but because the faces are so detailed already.

Here is an example so you know what I mean (btw: this is the first time an ingame character is shown):

Iolo (by Dragan):

And yes every NPC in the game will have an individual face (some guards MAY be an exception).

Excellent Iolo face there. Wink

Critic mode:

Hmm... He looks a bit young, despite the highly accurate hairline. The Iolo from Ultima VII part two had an Iolo with longer hair and more wrinkles. The uneven eyes and mouth serve to ease this, however.

This particular model captures the right personality though. So I don't think it would be a good idea to listen to my criticism on it, at the risk of marring the right feeling.

Also, is the Katrina face going to be changed? When Katrina's model was released by the old Redemption team, she looked very generic. (In fact I think I recall duplicate faces to hers in the original Morrowind.) I have faith that you've made main characters original for the most part, but Katrina was what dissapointed me the most before.

And make Katrina's hair red Razz

*wonders if the Redemption team is sick of him saying that*

The Katrina you saw in old pre-Titan shots had a "generic" face from a face pack for MW and of course she got a unique one now, so dont worry Wink In general you should forget these shots...

Iolo's face is quite impressive! I wasn't expecting the models' faces to look so realistic.

The arguments for not using character portraits are all quite sound and I agree that overall there seems to be little point to having portraits when the models are so detailed. I have a couple of queries and suggestions in relation to certain features you may be thinking of including that shall be affected by the absence of portraits.

How are you planning on adding party interjections in conversations with NPCs (such as the disgusted exclamation, for example, from Spark in U7 regarding the Trinsic shipwright) or party member in-game comments (such as - "What a horrible place!" when passing into a swamp or dungeon)? Text down the bottom of the screen could work for the in-game remarks (for example: 'Iolo says: "We are nearing my house."') but might be too easily missed. Party interjections in conversations could be put in square brackets. The camera could also swing to the character who is speaking, but this may be quite difficult to program and may well be disorienting to the player (just flicking before a character’s face while he speaks could be another option).

Hope I haven’t got too carried away with questions and suggestions (As everyone can probably see, interaction between characters and the way it is handled is one of the things I love most about the Ultima games).
