- stick to the virtues to be able to rescue the world

This doesn't look good to me. I think an evil Avatar should be able to save the world all the same as a virtuous one. Just circumstances become different. Or am I taking that too literally?

Well we have different plans for an evil Avatar (and here I go again telling too much) - as I stated before there are two different endings and different features of what the player can do AFTER the main story is finished - so what would an evil Avatar do? Wanting to rescue the world or maybe wanting to rule Britannia himself...? hmm... Anyway - in our game the evil player wont just simply have the same story as the good one in a slightly different way... but,... I stop here...

Hmm, actually I worded that badly. I think the thing I should be pointing at is Ultima 4.

Does the use of "Virtue" have to imply being a good guy? In Ultima 4, virtue is not exactly the goal. You could follow it if you wanted to, but it was no requirement.

Is it the case here, that you must follow virtue to save the world? Or will the "virtue style" of Pagan be used?

To make a blunt example... If I have to get a magic item from some guy. Will I have the option to kill him for it (Thusyl being non-virtuous) and take it for the good of saving the world? Or does that simply result in me being forced onto the dark side story?

That was what I meant to ask.

You cant say it in general. Well without giving away too much of the planned story: You have to become a new Avatar by building up karma like in Ultima 4. By dooing "bad things" your karma will decrease and so it will be more difficult for you to become what you need to be to win the game whit the "good path". So no you wont be forced to go the alternative path by commiting a crime. You just have to take care to keep the balance on the good side. People that do it the other way round are more happy with the other way anyway I guess Wink

I like playing a good Avatar. But then again, I do like playing other paths on second or third way through.

I understand the whole dealie with the virtues being that way. I was only wondering if it was 'possible' in a sense, to commit evil and still be the hero.

Taking a gander at games like Serpent Isle... It was often so tempting to wait for store clerks to leave before plundering the household. Though it was too easy with not enough consequence.

Another question in regards to this...

You mention a single crime won't set you onto the "bad guy path", but do repeated crimes do it? Ala, robbing the bank without anyone finding out?

No they dont, you have to have your karma level of each virtue on a certain level to complete the shirne quests. We will give the player enough possibilities to build up karma again, so also more than one crime wont make you the bad guy. I think you understand it a bit wrong: Its not that one special crime or doing one crime more often will set a variable which say "no good path anymore" - its on you to keep you karma level up. In other words: dont worry, you cant do one thing wrong that forces you to play in a way you dont want to...

EDIT: for people who dont know: this is about The New King and not Redemption

I don't understand. Does each virtue work as it's own counter?

IE

Give a coin to yonder beggar, you gain compassion.

Run up to said beggar and kick him in the groin, you lose compassion.

Or something essential to this?

Virtues does not necessarily mean that it is good. Look at Ultima 5 and Lord Blackthorn's virtues. They were exactly the same, and yet very different.

Indeed, the point I was originally getting at.

Question is really, who is the judge for virtue?

Also... How virtuous is it to favor one virtue over others?

The Gypsie questions used in Ultima in general prove enough that sometimes you just can't follow every virtue.

Leaves things to opinion on what you would consider the "Avatar" I guess.

The Avatar believes in every virtue and overall is a representation of all the virtues in harmony, but it is not possible to apply each virtue to certain situations, mainly the gypsy questions.

There isn't any real judge of virtue, such as someone like the timelord who oversees virtues. But I supposed there is karma, which was introduced in Ascension (boo ascension). Mages should be able to tell if you are turning evil or not, since they have a special connection with the ether.

I hate to correct you Xodus, but Karma was introduced in Ultima IV as part of the process of becoming the Avatar. I dont remember if it was in U5 or U6 though.

It was in UV, guys...

I really don't think it was in UVI, at least in the same way.

I don't recall them having this ability in past games... But then again I haven't played past games in a long time.

Exactly how is the Ether affected by good and evil? I know it can be affected by blackrock and extradimensional beings, ala the Guardian or the Serpents of Order and Chaos. I never heard of the actual persona affecting ether though.

I always saw good and evil as shades of gray. Some people see Ultima Eight as a self centered quest of evil by the Avatar, others view it as the Avatar performing a virtuous quest with a few mistakes along the road. And that's only one example.

One could point out the affects of order and chaos on the Serpent Isle, but those were caused by actual entities that merely followed given principles. Are there entities for good and evil in Ultima? (I think I recall the timelord possibly being named a representation of good, but I don't know)

EDIT: Blah! Nevermind. I just remembered that the Avatar is the Titan of Ether and most likely affects the Ether a great deal more than he used to. Would that be what you were hinting at?
