I know that this is even more stupid than asking what was the best of the Lord of the Ring books (movies) since it all is ONE. But everyone has its preferences and I just want to see whats the most favourite of the series. We all love them all thats clear, but which one is the one you would choose if you HAD to choose one?

Of course this is a fun thread (so dont start to fight folks Wink ). I have in mind that when it comes to that question the most mentioned 2 Ultimas are 5 and 7. Lets see if this is true Smile

Btw: I intentionally did not list the two Underworlds and the two Worlds of Ultima games.

I had hard time chosing between U:VI and U:VII but finaly it's more nostalgia than truly content as I love the whole three games (False Prophet, Black Gate and Serpent) the same...

My favorite is definetly Ultima VII though if I have to choose between Black Gate and Serpent Isle, it would be harder.

U6 all the way. That one is special - it is the only one, to my knowledge, that can be passed without killing anything (well, maybe the hydra on that island, and excepting the gargoyles at the beginning).

And has anyone here passed it without ever gaining an experience level? THAT is a challenge.

Yes. Let me guess. You didn't know how to level up either? :p

Hmm... or I guess you could just mean you didn't get experience points because you didn't fight anything. Well, I still don't think I'm an idiot for not knowing how to gain levels. I mean, it doesn't say anywhere that you have to Talk to the shrines.

Oh, no, I totally knew how to level up (but admittedly, that was because my Grandfather, who is still thrice the gamer I'll ever be - very cool guy - showed me how to after I cleansed the Shrine of Compassion).

I just sat down one day about three years ago and said "I'm gonna pass without levelling up." Since I know that game in and out (and in my sleep), it...well, it was still a challenge, but surviveable.

That is true - the shrine thing is a little counter-intuitive, isn't it? I guess they expect you to talk to the shrine at some point. Who knows?

As it turns out, yes - when I played it without attempting to kill anything or level up, I didn't have even enough XP to make level 5 by the time I liberated the Codex. I'm very proud of that.

Very Happy WtFD

I think that they thought that since you meditated to the shrines before (u4/u5) you would try the same trick in U6. Still speaking to stone slabs isn't something I do everyday Very Happy

U6 was my first Ultima game. So I had no idea about doing anything at the shrines besides getting the moonstones.

Not only that, but he's still my chief hookup for games - he buys them, plays them, and then sends them on down the line.

PhD. Electrical Engineer, though, and computers were his sub-specialty, so I suppose it comes with the territory. Brilliant programmer, hard core RPG/RTS gamer. I suppose that would make me really lucky.

My parents, techno-illiterates both, make up for that, though. My dad can't even configure Outlook.

I never could get into Ultima 6. The interface really bothered me. It took forever to manager my inventory, or do anything.

As much as Ultima IV and Ultima VII are hailed as two of the best RPGs of all time, I think Ultima V is really overlooked.

It took everything that Ultima IV gave you, added so much more.
